Miroslav Šutej, drawing from the Anti-fashion cycle, 1970
On Friday, December 19, 2014, starting at 7 pm in the Green Action space (Frankopanska 1,10000 Zagreb) prof. Tonči Vladislavić, Center for research of Fashion and Clothing (CIMO), will give a lecture as part of the Fashion and Clothing - New Theories and New Practices program, entitled Šutej's Antimode: Utopian Fashion Manifesto.
This lecture problematizes the ever-present question of the relationship between fashion and art, not avoiding the question present today: is fashion art, in the case of Šutej's magnificent opus of conceptual fashion drawings, created in the period 1964-1974, under the common name Antifashion (Antimoda). Fashion and art, throughout history as well as today, record greater or lesser convergences in the work of artists in whom the garment, separated from the function of clothing or fashion system, becomes a new material, a kind of semantic reservoir, which in realized or conceptual context (as sculpture, installation or part of a performance) is re-contextualized and resemanticized, gaining the attributes of a work of art.
What will interest us is how and why Šutej created the opus Antifashion (Antimoda), finding a challenge in clothing and fashion, as well as the way fashion items became anti-items, realizing the concept of an impossible fashion reality as a unique utopian fashion project.
The series of lectures Fashion and Clothing - New Theories and New Practices presents CIMO projects that, in addition to cultural contribution, bring a shift from the traditional understanding of fashion as a system of power in the name of cultural extension to the view of clothing practices as inclusive cultural and economic needs. CIMO center is particularly focused on the problem of sustainable design and nurtures and supports individual theoretical and creative efforts that stand against consumerism and the phenomenon of banal fashion.
Lectures Fashion and Clothing - New Theories and New Practices are held every December at 19.00 in the Green Action, Zagreb.
