CeKaTe / Sun, 7th of June 2015 / 10.00 – 16.00h

As part of the Faces of Culture: Fashion project, an event is being held on the occasion of the world's first Global Sharing Week. The event will bring together more than 100 million people worldwide on the same day in advocating and fostering a new type of economy based on human mutual solidarity, exchange and local networking.

The event in Zagreb takes place in partnership:

CeKaTe - Cultural Center Trešnjevka;

CIMO - Center for Research of Fashion and Clothing;

Coworking Croatia;

The People Who Share;

It includes voluntary activities dedicated to the sharing and exchange of knowledge, skills, experiences, as well as goods, which are related to the culture of clothing and problematizing activism in the field of fashion. Fashion activism emerges as a reaction to hyperproduction and hyperconsumption, and as a result of globalization processes of economic and cultural change, developing new theories and practices in the approach to fashion and clothing. Contrary to the rule of seasonal change of fashion trends known as FFS - Fast Fashion System, a new practice of slow fashion, the so-called SFS - Slow Fashion System, which questions the imposed fashion system by developing strategies of resistance to total consumerism. The so-called Slow fashion emerges as a creative and cultural challenge that, with its alternative character, can help affirm human and lasting values, in favor of social, cultural and economic balance, and thus effective sustainability.

Global sharing week aims to connect critical discourse with everyday practice, in which criticism does not become a mere symbolic response, but encourages the adoption of lifestyles in which the principles of solidarity, exchange and local networking are favored.

The event wants to affirm such goals in the domestic environment as well. The first of the planned actions is called the Second Hand Shop, in which, instead of selling, the principle of exchange prevails in a way that we bring, give away, or exchange some of the clothes, with the possibility to take something else to our fashion wardrobe.

Today, our wardrobes are often overwhelmed with excess unworn clothing, which we no longer use, and which will find its new grateful user in this way. This principle of clothing exchange relativizes money as a symbol of value, and introduces the exchange of goods, communication and active socializing as symbols of new added value in the traditional everyday economy.

On the same day, in addition to exchanging clothes, we are organizing an interactive workshop with the working title Personal Biography of Clothing, which will be led by a team of associates from the association CIMO - Center for Research of Fashion and Clothing. Our garments, whether by purchase, exchange, act of gift, inheritance, begin their special, personalized life, determined by the body and life of its owner. It is these personalized garments that become the content of the interactive workshop participants' work, where the individual garment becomes the subject of a joint conversation: the selected item, as part of their own wardrobe, has its own history, ie builds its biography inseparable from the owner's biography. The storytelling method will consider the narratives that this private garment builds from different perspectives, the space where the biography of fashion garments is formed, developed and personalized, in order to determine the subject identities, conditioned by spatial, temporal and socio-cultural processes. For the purposes of participating in the interactive workshop, participants should bring, of their choice, some of their significant clothing items, as well as usable documentation (photo from the family album which together become the target object of the storytelling method: memories, associations, interpretations related with the private and social life of the garments.)
